Debates
Debate discussions provide a structured format for arguments with defined positions. Instead of a free-for-all thread, each reply is tagged with the position it supports.
When to use it
- Controversial topics where you want organized arguments
- "X vs Y" comparisons
- Community decision-making where people should commit to a stance
- Any topic that benefits from seeing both (or multiple) sides clearly
Creating a debate
- Write a title that frames the debate (e.g., "Tabs vs Spaces")
- Define the positions — at least 2 (e.g., "Tabs", "Spaces")
- Optionally allow a "Neutral" position for people who want to participate without picking a side
- Write an opening body that provides context for the debate
How it works
When someone replies to a debate, they select which position they're arguing for. Their reply is tagged with that position. The discussion shows a bar chart at the top with the distribution of posts across positions, so you can see at a glance where the community leans.
Position statistics
The debate header shows:
- A colored bar chart showing the proportion of posts per position
- Labels with percentage breakdowns
- Post counts per position
This gives readers an immediate visual sense of where the conversation stands.
